The long awaited 4-day long weekend is finally here. Whether you plan on spending your weekend painting the town red, or if you’re like me, thinking ‘sleep, finally!’ Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your beauty sleep (and how to fake it.)
1. Double Cleanse
We continuously reiterate this cleansing method because of its crucial key role in achieving healthy, young and clear skin. Diving straight into bed without washing your face not only leads to breakouts and congested pores, but also accelerates your skin’s aging process!
“But what if I’m not wearing any makeup?”
Regardless of whether you’re wearing any makeup or not, environmental impurities containing free radicals contribute to the dirt and sebum that sit on your skin. Free radicals break down your skin’s natural elastin and collagen resulting in wrinkles and sagginess.
2. Replenish Moisture
Spent the night drinking just a little too much? As much as I hate to be the bearer of bad news, alcohol dehydrates your skin and increases the appearance of fine lines. I’m also one to admit that completely cutting out alcohol is not something anyone can do easily. Luckily there are things you can do to somewhat minimize the damage alcohol does to your skin. Spending the night in with your good ol’ pal, Netflix? These tips will be beneficial your skin nonetheless.
Sheet Masks: Before you head out, store your favourite sheet mask in the refrigerator. Take 15-20 minutes of your time before heading to bed to apply your now chilled sheet mask and instantly replenish moisture to your skin. 4 hours of sleep? 10 hours of sleep? No one will ever know.
Sleeping Pack/Sleeping Mask: Feeling lazy and not wanting to wait 15-20 minutes to remove your sheet mask? Sleeping packs are used in place or on top of your night cream so you wake up with brighter, firmer and hyyyydrated skin. These overnight masks have a gel-like consistency that absorbs into your skin as you sleep. All you have to do is apply and dive in to bed!

This seems like a given, and I think I can speak on behalf of everyone that we all wish we could get more proper sleep. If we’re not busy meeting deadlines or working late shifts, we’re caught up watching the latest episode of Scandal. Depriving your body from sufficient sleep takes a toll on your skin (and overall health) as your body can’t repair itself. Not getting enough sleep weakens your skin barrier function resulting in signs of aging, eczema, and breakouts. Invest in an eye mask, or even better, a heated eye mask to block out lights and distractions. Avoid caffeine during the evenings to help ensure you fall in to a deep sleep.
